Coach Chad Whittenburg announced Monday his resignation as head coach of the University of Tennessee Southern's Clay Target program. Whittenburg, who last month led UTS to its 2nd consecutive ACUI National Championship, just completed his 8th year at the helm of the program. He guided Tennessee Southern to a total of six national titles between 2016-22.
Many words can be said about Coach Chad Whittenburg. Leader, mentor, friend, just to name a few. But, when speaking of the impact he has made on our institution, his colleagues had some words too:
"We're very appreciative of Coach Whittenburg's longstanding service to the University of Tennessee Southern," Athletics Director Brandie Paul said. "Our program made tremendous progress under his leadership, and we wish him and his family nothing but the best in the future." His student athletes are also grateful for his commitment to their success on the field of competition, and as students. "Coach took the time to instill in me life lessons that I will always remember. He has made me a better athlete and young man," commented Austin Carleton.
"At this point in my life, I have made the very difficult decision to step away and focus on the blessings in my life, most importantly my family," Whittenburg said. "I am very proud of the academic and athletic successes we have accomplished during my tenure. I wholeheartedly believe this is where the Lord is leading me, to slow down and listen."
This is not "goodbye" but "see you later" from Coach Whittenburg, as he pledges to continue to support our championship program, "It has been my esteemed honor and privilege to coach college student athletes and to end my career as a Head Coach in the best University system in the country - The University of Tennessee! I look forward to assisting the future head coach in continuing the legacy and winning tradition that we have established."
Tennessee Southern will now begin the process of executing a national search for its next head Clay Target coach. Whittenburg's last day will be June 30. The position will be posted on May 2, 2022.
