The University of Tennessee Southern volleyball team notched their first win of the season in four sets (23-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-16) on Friday (Aug. 19) against Brescia.
Brescia took advantage of a pair of six-point runs to take the first set. With the score level at 15 in the second set, UTS reeled off 10 of the final 16 points to equalize the match at one. In the third and fourth sets, the Firehawks blazed by the Bearcats to take the match.
Senior Brianna Turner had a match-high 16 kills on 29 swings. Junior Morgan Avrit contributed 11 terminations and hit .161 (11-6-31). Sophomore Laura Howell recorded 26 assists, and senior Dakota Graham posted 5 blocks.
In match two, the Firehawks (1-1) ended the day with a loss in four sets (25-14, 16-25, 21-25, 18-25) to William Carey. In the middle of the first set, the Firehawks took advantage of a six-point run to take the first set. The final three sets were back-and-forth with the Crusaders taking all three.
Turner had a match-high 14 kills on 30 swings. Avrit and junior Sophia Ortega each contributed 11 terminations. Howell (23) and junior Oliva Cox (20) both recorded 20+ assists.
