University of Tennessee Southern Firehawks Double Down Shawnee State

The University of Tennessee Southern men's soccer team defeated Shawnee State 4-2 on Sunday, October 23.  

In the opening half, UTS would strike first scoring in the 10th minute. Alejandro Blanco would header in a Carlos Galan cross. Shawnee State would roar back to level the match three minutes later. UTS would lead in shots 10-8.

In the second half, both teams would score again. The Bears would take their only lead on a successful PK in the 60th minute. The Firehawks answered scoring three unanswered goals in the final 29 minutes to take the victory back to Pulaski. In the 61st minute, Galan would net a 26-yard shot over the keeper's head from Miguel Tizapa. Tizapa would add the game-winner in the 72nd minute from Manuel Otero. Konstantinos Theodorakis would add one in the 86th minute. Otero and Blanco would be credited with assists. The Firehawks would outshoot the Bears 17-14 and would lead shots-on-goal 11-8.

Ajay Murray would record the win. He would face eight shots and record six saves.

MSC TOURNAMENT

On November 1st, the MSC championship will begin. This year's edition will be held at higher seed sites for each round. Here is the tournament breakdown:

  • Seeds 1-5 will get an opening round bye and will play in the quarterfinals on Nov. 4-5.
  • The 6-8 seeds will host the lower three seeds on Nov. 1. The winners will advance to the quarterfinals.
  • The semifinals and finals will be held at the highest remaining seed on Nov. 9 and 11.
