A strong second-half performance put Maryville over the top against conference foe Huntingdon 60-48 on Sunday.
Emma Huskey picked up her fourth double-double of the season, scoring 12 points and recording 10 rebounds while also picking up two steals and drawing four charges.
Courtney Carruthers led the squad with 18 points and six assists, while also picking up a team-high three steals to lead the Scots' defensive efforts.
After three-straight losses of six points or fewer, this was a big win for Huskey and her teammates.
"It feels great, especially because it's a home game," Huskey said. "We've been struggling with not finishing out games. We're close, within five points or so every game. It's been tough for us picking it up and finishing the game out."
Strong Second Half
Maryville finished the first half down five points, trailing the Hawks 24-19. The Scots shot just 29.2 percent (7-for-24) in the first 20 minutes of the game and were outrebounded 24-21.
Travillian had a message for his team in the locker room during halftime, and Huskey made sure it was heard.
"Coach T basically looked at us and told us if we want to win, we need to pick it up," Huskey said. "We can't just lay down and roll over and act like we can't survive a game when we have so much talent, from the freshman to the seniors. We've just got to finish and fully support our team."
Message received.
Loud and clear.
The Scots burst through the gate in the second half, opening with a 16-3 scoring run, capped off by a contested jumper in the paint by Anna Kate Bechman.
By the end of the third quarter, MC had turned a five-point deficit into a seven-point lead heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
Maryville continued rolling in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Hawks 18-13, and capping off a strong team victory.
The Scots forced 12 turnovers in the second half and improved to 51.6 percent shooting (16-for-31).
Great Game for Anna Kate
Bechman tied her career-high, scoring 9 points while playing a season-high 27 minutes in the contest. The senior showed great veteran leadership while she was on the floor and helped facilitate MC's second half-comeback
Travillian has been very impressed with Bechman this season, even in her limited playing time.
"If you're a parent and you've got a kid, you want a kid like Anna Kate," Travillian said. "That's a kid who is in the gym working, that's a kid who is always going to be helping you, saying 'good job good job good job'. She's going to practice hard to make you get better and then every now and then your number gets called. Today her number was called, and she was big time."
The Scots are home again next weekend with another set of back-to-back games. On Friday, MC faces off against Wesleyan at 6 p.m. The following day, the Scots match up against Berea. Tipoff for that game is at 2 p.m.
