The Roane State Raiders secured at least a number three seed in the upcoming NJCAA Region VII tournament with a 69-64 win over Walters State on Wednesday.

The Roane men jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first half holding the Senators scoreless for the first 4:15 of the game.

Walters State fought back and twice shrunk the Raiders advantage to three points. At the half, the Raiders led 28-24.

In the second half, the Senators kept it close and closed the deficit to one point, 59-58, with 2:14 to play in the game.

The Raiders were able to hold off the late-game surge to get the 69-64 win, never trailing in the contest.

After the game, head coach Alan Holt said, “It’s really nice to get your twentieth win and solidify third [seed] against your conference rival.”

The victory improved Roane State’s overall record to 21-7 and 13-4 in conference. The Raiders have not had a 20-win season in more than a decade.

The defending Region VII champions hit 47.9% (23-48) from the floor and 23.8% (5-21) from beyond the arc. At the line, the team hit for 69.2% (18-26).

Individually, freshman guard Sebastian Tidor led the team in scoring with 18. Sophomore guards Isaiah Poore and Kavon Blankenship scored 14 and 13, respectively.

Coming up for the Raiders, the team travels to Dyersburg for the last game of the regular season.

Talking about the upcoming game, Holt noted, “It should be a really good one. Dyersburg has been struggling a little bit lately but they’re ultra-talented.”

The tip is scheduled for 4:00 pm Central.
