East Tennessee State University Davies in contention to make GB&I Walker Cup Team

097e

The 49th edition of the Walker Cup will be played Sept. 2-3, 2023 at the historic Old Course in St Andrews, and on Friday the Great Britain and Ireland team announced its preliminary squad members. ETSU’s Archie Davies (Carlisle, Wales) was one of the 19 golfers selected.

Of those 19 members named, eight players – including Davies – made up the GB&I team that defeated the Continent of Europe in the St. Andrews Trophy this past July.

Davies is looking to make his first Walker Cup squad and become the first Buccaneer to play in the Walker Cup since Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) played in back-to-back events in 2011 and 2013.

The final squad of 10 golfers will be named in August 2023 as Stuart Wilson is the GB&I captain.

“We have selected a talented group of players who are key to our preparations for the Walker Cup and share our determination to win back the trophy from the United States of America," said Wilson on Friday.

“We will be getting together in St Andrews so that the players can really get to grips with the Old Course, understand its subtleties and learn from those individuals who have vast experience of the links.

“Our aim is to select a team which will give us the best chance of winning the match next year. In that regard, we will continue to monitor the players’ performances in amateur events over the coming months and provide them with support and advice. There is also still time for golfers not included in the squad to play their way into our plans and we will be keeping a close eye on their results too.”

The Walker Cup is a prestigious international match bringing together leading amateur male players from Great Britain and Ireland and the United States of America for the biennial contest.

The Walker Cup has been played by many of the sport’s greatest golfers and selection to play in the historic match is often regarded as the highlight of an amateur’s career. Past competitors include Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Collin Morikawa, Will Zalatoris, Sir Michael Bonallack, Padraig Harrington and Rory McIlroy. The Walker Cup began in 1922 and the United States of America leads the series 38-9, having won the last three contests, with one match tied.

The 49th Walker Cup will be staged at the Old Course in St Andrews in September 2023. It is the oldest and most iconic golf course in the world and was host venue for The Open in 2022. It will be the first time the Walker Cup has been held over the Old Course since 1975.
