Milligan University will remember a distinguished community member and alumna during the university’s second annual “Betty Goah Day” on Thursday, March 16. Events will include a special chapel service and tree planting.

“Betty was a local community advocate and servant-leader who worked on behalf of the poor, the sick, minorities and the homeless,” said Gwen Ellis, Milligan’s director of multicultural engagement. “It is important for us to celebrate her legacy and contributions.”

T.R. Dunn will speak at Milligan’s honorary chapel service at 11 a.m. in the Mary B. Martin Auditorium in Seeger Chapel. Dunn is the founder of 4ThirTEEN, a faith-based organization serving teens, and director of youth leadership development for Summit Leadership. A ceremonial tree planting in memory of Goah will take place on the Mary Sword Commons at 3 p.m.

Goah attended Milligan in the late 1980s, and the Goah Diversity Scholars program at Milligan honors her. She served on various regional boards and local agencies in Johnson City and was a faithful member of Thankful Baptist Church until her death in March 2006.

The event is open to the public. Goah program alumni, past faculty and community leaders are invited to attend.

The Goah Diversity Scholars program at Milligan recognizes full-time undergraduate students who enhance the educational experience of all students by sharing their diverse cultural experiences.
